Round the Island 2010

RTI_June_2010_022 Competitors in this years Island Sailing Club Round the Island Race were blessed with superb, albeit not record breaking, weather. Early starts were dictated by the tide on the day and the entrance to the Hamble was teeming with boats pouring out to the start area by 0430. The first start was at 0500 with the last classes clearing the RYS line at 0640. The strong west going tide made it hard for boats to stay east of the line before the gun then the northerly wind meant spinnakers up as soon as possible after the start.

The race had some 1745 entries overall split into two major groups, IRC with 500+ entries and ISC with 800+ entries. The RAFYC were well represented in both these groups gaining top 100 positions in each. There is a trophy for the best Club result in each group however at present we may not have a complete picture of all members racing so please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. In IRC our Sigma fleet made a strong showing with Sigress and Shadowfax recording 47^th and 66^th overall closely followed by With Alacrity at 77^th.

Competition in ISC was closer with Club boats taking 25^th, Pickle, 31^st, Vogon, & 34^th, Topaz, places overall. Both 1^st & 2^nd places in the Family Trophy were taken by Club boats, Pickle and Vogon respectively.

In ISC the Club was also represented by 9 members in 3 teams, competing for the Arun Yacht Club Team Challenge Trophy. RAFYC Red consisting of Topaz, Vogon & No Option; RAFYC White with Arty Miss, Katy Mac III & Poppy; finally RAFYC Blue with Shropshire Lady, Stag Knight and Dreamtime.

Our Red team came in 3^rd, just 1 point behind the Royal Victoria Yacht Club's team and 12 points behind the Island Sailing Club 2 team so some work to do next year chaps!

In addition Spitfire, Team RAFBF, won the J/80 One Design class
