On Saturday 27th June, the RAFYC held a “Scramble in the Hamble” – a day of fun, food, rounders and water-fights. My family and I went along, thinking that it could be nice to get to know some new people, and, by the end of it, found ourselves soaked to the skin and high with adrenaline and laughter.

First, we all met up at The Jolly Sailor and some of the other kids and I had a practice water-fight on the pontoons; they all ganged up on me, the older kid, and I became well and truly soaked!

We went up the Hamble River in our tenders and dinghies, and spent a few hours in a sunny field, relaxing in the warm, picnicking, playing cricket and rounders and then falling down holes in the marshy banks when we tried to get back in the boats! I think that several of us were permanently wet the entire day...

It’s not often that a kid gets to shoot an adult in the face with a water blaster, so my sister and I (not to mention lots of other kids) certainly took advantage of the opportunity! It was certainly the most fun we’ve all had in ages; even my parents really let go and enjoyed shooting other yacht-clubbers in the faces or chucking buckets of water over them!

Overall, it was a fantastic day – one that will certainly stick in my memory and next year certainly can’t roll around fast enough for me.
